Here are some helpful tips that will assist you in your packaging

Mostly taken from the Dao of the Windows Installer, the following would be the most relevant Best Practices to users of AdminStudio LANDesk edition:

  1. Don’t repackage an MSI.
  2. Don’t repackage Windows Updates. (i.e. security fixes, IE updates)
  3. Use a Clean System for Repackaging.
  4. Repackage on a system that represents as closely as possible your target environment.
  5. When customizing Vendor MSI packages, use Transforms rather than directly modifying the package (where possible).
  6. Understanding File Versioning Rules: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa368267(VS.85).aspx
  7. Enable the Logging policy on Clients so a log is available immediately when a problem occurs: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=223300
  8. Test Thoroughly before deployment.
  9. Use Virtual Environments for Testing and Support.
  10. Use Always Install Elevated policy for properly elevated packages: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa367561(VS.85).aspx
